Leave a pre-bid
Open a lot and place your bid any time before the gala. You can raise it as often as you like.

The room opens with it
On the night the auctioneer starts each lot from the highest pre-bid, then takes bids from the floor.

The hammer decides
If nobody in the room goes higher, the lot is yours. If they do, you can bid again from your table.
